The Oxford Companion to Music has described the liturgical work of John Taverner (1490-1545) as 'one of the pinnacles of the Tudor tradition.' His soaring 'Missa Gloria Tibi Trinitas' is particularly impressive, not only for its majestic flow but also for his setting of the words 'in nomine,' which influenced dozens of Renaissance composers including Byrd, Gibbons, Tallis and Weelkes, right up to Purcell. This program will also include Taverner’s expansive motet for Easter, 'Dum transisset Sabatum,' and the poignant and reconciling Holy Week setting of the words 'In manus tuas' by Taverner’s contemporary, John Sheppard (1515-1558).
